As she drifted across the murky waters, the old Cartographer's words haunted her thoughts. “Your business is your own,” she had said, but Eletta knew that her actions would affect&nbsp; the destiny of many. As night fell, casting the Swamp in an eerie glow, Eletta docked her boat on a small island. The air was thick with the scent of decaying vegetation, and the distant croak of unseen creatures echoed through the trees.&nbsp; Eletta found a sheltered spot beneath a gnarled tree and lay down to rest. Her mind drifted as she closed her eyes, the weight of her mission pressing down on her. In the depths of her sleep, visions began to swirl. She stood in a lush, green part of the Swamp, an otherworldly light illuminating the scene. Before her, a figure emerged from the mist, cloaked in the shimmering essence of the Swamp itself. This mysterious figure exuded an ancient and powerful presence. “Eletta,” the figure’s voice echoed softly, like the rustle of leaves in the wind. “You’ve come far, but your journey is just beginning.” Eletta found herself able to speak, though her voice seemed distant. “Who are you?” “Nevermind that child. Who I am is not important. It’s what I see that has value” the figure replied, her eyes reflecting the wisdom of ages. “You have planted a seed of mischief. A seed can become a powerful force for change, but you must choose how to nurture it.” Before Eletta could respond, the figure raised her hand, and the air around them shimmered. Visions of other Realms appeared—some teeming with life, others shrouded in darkness. “These are Realms long ago touched by one of your kind, Rimor,” the figure explained. “He sought to change through chaos, and his actions brought unforeseen consequences still seen today.” Eletta stared into the visions, mesmerized. “What happened to him?” “He became a legend,” the figure replied. “A figure of both reverence and fear. You know him as the Nemesis. His choices shaped the fates of countless worlds. Now, you stand at a similar crossroads, but remember, mischief and chaos are not the same. Mischief can be controlled and directed; chaos cannot. They are different, but each is merely one step away from becoming the other.” The figure’s expression grew serious. “You must decide how to nurture the seed you’ve planted. Will it grow wild, creating havoc, or will it find purpose. Are you capable of tending the garden, or will you succumb to the weeds that will surely come to destroy the harvest?” Eletta felt a chill run down her spine. A jarring flash of uncertainty, but then just as quickly, she remembered who she was. Eletta grinned, her mischievous nature taking hold. “I’ve chosen my path. Mischief is my calling, and I thrive amongst uncertainty” The figure nodded. “Then embrace it, but be prepared for the consequences. Every stone cast into the swamp ripples the surface of the water beyond its impact .” With a final, knowing look, the figure faded into the mist, leaving Eletta alone with her thoughts. She awoke with a start, the dream lingering in her mind. She knew she couldn’t turn back now. Her journey had only just begun. The next day, Eletta navigated her boat through the last stretches of the Swamp, determined to reach the Playa and then cross it to return to the city and witness the effects of her actions firsthand. As she neared the edge of the Swamp, she thought about the reasons that had driven her to this point. The capital was a technilogical marvel, but it was rife with corruption. Eletta had seen how those with means&nbsp;exploited the artificial systems maintaining the Realm’s delicate balance for their gain, while ordinary people toiled without hope for a better future. She remembered stinging loss—a friend ruined by the machinations of the elite. It was a wound that never fully healed, reinforcing her desire to reset the balance of power. The Realm needed a shake-up. Her actions were not a desire for chaos, but a dream where innovation and progress were born from necessity. As she neared the edge of the Swamp, she noticed another boat in the distance, moving gracefully through the murky waters. Curious, Eletta steered her boat closer. As she approached, she saw a figure standing at the helm, cloaked in white robes that shimmered in the early morning light. The figure turned, revealing a calm, serene face framed by long, silver hair. “Funny how those of us content to observe always appear so obvious,” Eletta muttered, recognizing the emblem on his robes that marked him as a follower of tranquility. “We’ve met before. Seren, is it?” Seren nodded, his expression tranquil. “Indeed, Eletta. I have been observing your journey.” Eletta’s hand instinctively went to her knife. “What do you want? I thought your kind never interfered.” Seren smiled gently. “We do not. I am here only to offer a different perspective. The mischief you sow may bring about change, but it also has the potential for unforeseen turmoil.” Eletta felt a mix of curiosity and suspicion. “How benevolent of you. And what would you suggest instead?” “Guidance and patience,” Seren said, his voice calm and measured. “Instead of disrupting the balance, work within it, nurturing growth and harmony.” Eletta scoffed. “Harmony? The city is beyond repair. It needs to be rebuilt.” Seren nodded thoughtfully. “True, the city has its flaws. But sudden, violent change can lead to more suffering. Why not guide change subtly, fostering understanding and cooperation.” Eletta’s eyes narrowed. “Isn’t even suggesting that a betrayal of your vows?” Seren’s serene expression did not waver. “I am merely making an observation. The choice is yours. I will not interfere with actions you set in motion.” “I see. You have no problem bothering me, you just won’t take any responsibility yourself. Great. No wonder nobody likes your kind.” As they spoke, the Playa’s edge came into view, the vast expanse of sand stretching towards the distant ice Shelf where the city lay. Eletta felt a pang of longing mixed with determination. She had already set her plans in motion; there was no turning back. “I’ve chosen my path,” Eletta said firmly. “I need to see this through; so unless you’re going to stand in my way--get out of the way.”&nbsp; Seren’s expression remained serene. “I understand. But remember, I am here if you ever wish to seek a different way.” With that, Seren’s boat veered off, disappearing into the mist. Eletta shook her head, refocusing on her goal. The city awaited, and with it, the culmination of her plans. As she crossed the sweltering Playa, the desert heat beat down on her, but she pressed on. Finally, she reached the ice Shelf and made her way towards the capital. The familiar cobblestone streets brought a sense of both comfort and anticipation. Eletta could already sense the tension in the air. People moved hurriedly, casting nervous glances around them. Whispers of unrest and uncertainty echoed through the alleys. Eletta made her way to an apartment overlooking the central square, where the city's leaders were known to gather. She watched with pleasure as they huddled together, their faces etched with worry. The virus she had planted was beginning to take effect. The city's delicate balance was starting to tip. Suddenly, a soft voice interrupted her thoughts. “Is this what you wanted, Eletta?” She turned to see Seren standing beside her, a look of genuine concern in his eyes. “The city is on the brink of chaos. Is this the transformation you envisioned?” Eletta clenched her fists, her resolve hardening. “Mischief, Seren, don’t you know the difference?” Seren sighed. “You’re making a mistake.” Eletta scoffed. “What would you know about making mistakes?” At that, Seren disappeared into the crowd, leaving Eletta alone with her thoughts. As she watched the unfolding events below, she couldn't help but wonder if there was truth in Seren’s words. But it was too late to turn back now. The path of mischief was set, and she would see it through to the end.

By the time the sun peeked over the horizon, Eletta had almost reached the border between the Swamp and the Playa. The morning sunlight danced upon the Swamp and warmed her face. So far, Eletta had not run into any trouble, save for a couple of curious stares as she passed the various Flotillas.&nbsp;But as she approached the Playa, she saw a group of figures on the horizon. Micropolitans, although they seemed different somehow. As she got closer, she could see the hardened lines of their faces, chisled into frowns. They were much bigger and more intimidating than the Micropolitans she had come across the day before. Their clothes were worn and bedraggled, and their faces a deep brown from days out in the sun. Eletta guessed that they were returning from a long journey in the Playa.&nbsp;Once Eletta reached the group, one figure, who had deep green eyes and who she guessed was at least seven foot tall, stepped forward. He seemed to be leader of the group. She felt his calculating gaze sweep over her.&nbsp;“We don’t take kindly to outsiders here,” he snarled. One of the other Micropolitans, who sported a deep scar that ran from his temple down to his jawline, snatched her bag. He rooted around and grabbed the cartologist’s map.&nbsp;“Nor do we take kindly to thieves,” green eyes added.&nbsp;“I am no thief,” she said, trying with all her might to keep her voice steady. “Your Cartographer gave me the map herself".&nbsp;Green eyes snorted. "She gave it to you? Or did you take it under false pretences?"&nbsp;The Micropolitan that had grabbed her bag unfolded the map and stared at it for what seemed like ages. "The seal is genuine," he muttered, deferring to green eyes.&nbsp;Green eyes stared her down and stepped forward, his imposing figure casting a dark shadow on the water. "I'll let you go this time," he growled. "But make no mistake, if I catch you here again, I will not be so kind."&nbsp;Eletta nodded and made to get back in her boat, hardly daring to breathe. But green eyes stood directly in her way. "The Realm isn't as safe as it used to be. There are dark forces at work," he said softly, too quiet for the others to hear.&nbsp;Eletta opened her mouth to reply, her mind racing with questions. But before she could utter a word, the man spoke again, "now get out of here before I change my mind", he growled. Any trace of kindness had disappeared from his voice.&nbsp;She took that as her cue to leave, and jumped back in her boat. She was just metres away from the Swamp border.&nbsp;Eletta only allowed herself a breather when she was deep in the Playa. Her mind was a whirlwind of confusion. What could these forces be? Could they interact with her plans? Why did he warn her?&nbsp;There were no answers for her here. She would have to get back to the capital. But first, she needed to sleep. She was exhausted and needed all the energy she could get for the next few days of travelling.&nbsp;After eating a few biscuits that she'd found in the depths of her bag, Eletta fell into a deep sleep. &nbsp;The sky was glowing with a soft golden hue when she sat up. Her eyes widened in astonishment — there, to her right, stood a woman. She was dressed in the robes of the Ancients and her long dark hair was blowing slightly in the wind. She seemed to emanate a golden light, which cast an otherworldly glow all around her.&nbsp;Eletta rubbed her eyes in disbelief. But when she looked up again, the woman was still there, smiling softly at her.&nbsp;"Eletta," the figure said, her gentle voice seeming to caress Eletta's face.&nbsp;"Who are you?" Eletta asked in wonder.&nbsp;"I am a guardian of the Ancients," the woman replied. "I am here to guide you on your quest. There is someone in the capital that you must seek out. They will provide you with the answers you need".&nbsp;Eletta was once again brimming with questions, "But who are you? And how do you know about my quest?"&nbsp;"I can't stay long," the woman said. "This journey has drained my power." As she spoke, the golden hue around her flickered slightly. "The man's name is Aric. Find him." &nbsp;With that, the woman began to fade, the golden light dimming slightly. But before she faded into nothingness, the woman threw Eletta what looked like an amulet. "It will keep you safe!", the woman said, before she was whisked away into nothingness."&nbsp;Eletta awoke with a start, her heart racing. "It was just a dream," she told herself. She had bigger things to worry about, anyway; she had to get back to the Capital. But as she stood up, she felt a warm glow on her chest. "The amulet," she breathed. The pendant was about the size of a small coin and in the shape of an eye.&nbsp;That day, Eletta couldn't shake her feeling of uneasiness. There was so much going on in this Realm that she had no idea about. She had to get to the Capital.&nbsp;The next few days of travelling passed by uneventfully. Eventually, Eletta caught sight of the Capital. It seemed to be buzzing with life, full of men, women and children going about their daily life. &nbsp;"Time to get some answers," she muttered to herself. Her eyes shone with determination as she headed toward the heart of the Capital.

The Guardian of the Ancients

Eletta wondered just how slow the realizations would be. A few networks going haywire in the capital wouldn’t raise any alarm bells, but central servers monitoring collectible trade were a different story. When they realized the backups couldn’t run… That would be a clue. If they couldn’t run. The genius of the virus was not even in its gradual infiltration of any computerized system, but in its reversing effect. It would shut down a system for a brief period, before releasing its hold. Then again, at seemingly random, infuriating intervals that belayed the idea that there was even a virus to begin with. A system shut-down is one thing, and could be considered by your average tech mechanic to be some non-malicious issue. But by the time assessments of malware came about for a capricious virus such as this, no conclusions would be made. Eletta considered the next aspect of the virus to be the magnum opus of its creator. Before infiltrating a given aspect of any network, it would learn from the frequency of adjustments being made by security measures. These complex systems in the capital city utilized significant AI resources through their collectible tariffs, effectively acting like white blood cells for all networks containing sensitive data or integral computation. The virus didn’t go in as an obvious invader, nor did it masquerade as a healthy aspect of the network… It mimicked white blood cells themselves. When it mimicked the AI in this way, it also jumped into jobs that the AI would’ve done. Each AI component would pull back as the virus effectively said “I’ve got it from here!” And as the proverbial Narrator would say: he did not have it from here. ~~~ “What in the name of the Void is going ON?!” For the third time in two days, Robba let out a roar in the middle of his shop. Startled customers poring over Lasers and Robotics equipment were confused as well - their unhappy host was known for his reliable tech. Somehow, this week had been cursed with faulty performance of even the simpler models on display. This time, a dishwasher powered by steam had failed to run a full cycle, puking out soaky utensils onto the ceramic floor. Robba stooped with consternation to begin cleaning up the mess, while his two young boys giggled and popped bubbles as the tension subsided. Their mother laid a towel into the puddle and looked quizzically at the disheveled man. She’d not seen him quite like this, not since the Terraform two decades ago. Nearly all of his extended family had been relegated to the Micropolitan world of bucket boats after the Great Pond had dissolved into a massive Ice Shelf. Despite his technical inexperience, Robba had decided to try his luck in the capital, and she stuck by him. It was a challenge he took in stride, making the best of a bad situation. But the look in his eyes, it was that same look - not of fear, but of premonition. Of gathering his resources and grit as he prepared to watch everything crumble around him, in a new and devastating way. ~~~ Eletta enjoyed the slow ride back to the Flotilla, dawn breaking as she coolly gazed to the horizon. She had little need for sleep after the secret pleasure of a wild deed executed swiftly. The zest of silent celebration brimmed in her as the flat bottom boat made its way through swampy waters, a soft breeze making her poling efforts scarcely necessary. The Flotilla appeared at high noon, the sun blazing down upon Eletta as she docked neatly in a hackneyed alcove. She hopped up into the central pathway that linked two of the seven Flotilla barges together and almost immediately found the Cartographer’s gaze. The old woman was standing serene-like at the other end of the barge, leaning against a railing. Despite her age and frail appearance, she appeared relaxed and full of life. A curious smile spread across her face as Eletta froze, trying to regain composure. “Back so soon?” The Cartographer asked. Eletta found her grace and matched the energy of the woman. “Nothing like a quick sojourn through an exotic swampland. Efficiency is one of my talents.” “As with your digital minions.” Her heart skipped a beat. Had the woman known about the chip? Was her bag searched? It was an absurd subterfuge to even bring such technologies to this primitive society - who could possibly surmise there were uses for it? The Cartographer walked towards Eletta, who was now oddly entranced. “Young lady, my craft is not in knowing the mere locations and metrics of this place. The swamp eludes simple map-making anyways, with the playful islands disappearing, and all.” “Well, then what do you do?” Eletta asked the straightforward question to try to appear innocent, as well as hopefully get a simpler answer. But the woman was as shapeshifting as the terrain, almost as if it spoke through her. “I am Bedolina, the 7th-generation Cartographer of this lineage. It is said to take seven generations for the map-making of a geo feature to come to fruition, requiring a worthy explorer for bestowal.” Eletta shifted, Bedolina reading her mind. “The map you were given was not such a map as I speak. But you’ve shown your penchant for exploration, whatever its prerogatives. Now I have a true quest for you, if you wish to stay.” Bedolina reached into her garments and produced a large scroll, held together with three thick strands of blue feather-like braids. Its ends were of a more solid wood-like material, securing the integrity of the parchment. She didn’t offer it, simply looking up with mysterious indifference. “Might this swamp reveal the secrets you seek? Or will you retreat to the chaos of citadel luxury…” Eletta blinked twice.
