The Archivist burst out of the Historical Archives and into the chaos of the city street. His mind reeled with the implications of what he had uncovered, and his feet carried him almost involuntarily, faster and faster, until he found himself weaving through the crowds. He barely noticed the flashing neon signs or the distant hum of drones overhead. He was too focused on the storm inside his head. That’s when it happened. A screech of tires, a flash of light, and a sickening thud. He was thrown onto the pavement, his body crumpled and unmoving. For a moment, everything was dark. When he awoke, it was to the sterile scent of antiseptic and the rhythmic beeping of a heart monitor. The Archivist blinked against the harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital room, his vision swimming. A shadow moved in the corner of the room. At first, he thought it was a nurse, but as his eyes adjusted, he saw a man in a black suit standing by the window. “ASX,” the man said, his voice smooth and unhurried. “That’s what you may call me.”The Archivist tried to speak, but his throat was dry, and his head felt heavy. The man stepped closer, his expression unreadable. “You’ve seen things you weren’t meant to,” ASX continued. “Be careful where you tread. Knowledge is a double-edged sword.” Before the Archivist could respond, the door opened, and a nurse entered. ASX was gone, as if he had never been there. The Archivist’s heart raced, but the nurse smiled warmly, oblivious to his confusion. Over the next few days, he pondered the encounter. The nurses insisted that no visitors had come, and yet he couldn’t shake the feeling that ASX had been real. Stranger still, his recovery was remarkably swift. The persistent aches in his body, even the chronic pain in his knee, had vanished. The nurses marveled at his progress, but the Archivist could only wonder: what had ASX done to him? Once discharged, he felt an urge to escape the city once more, to seek answers or perhaps solace. He decided to visit an old friend living in the Dune, a sprawling sandscape far from the urban sprawl. The village there was a marvel of ingenuity, its structures built into the dunes themselves, blending seamlessly with the terrain. The air was dry but carried a faint, refreshing coolness from the oasis at its center. His friend, Orin, greeted him with a booming laugh that echoed across the dunes. “By the sands, you look like you’ve been through the wringer!” Orin exclaimed, his colorful robes shimmering in the late afternoon sun. His arms opened wide as if to embrace the entire world. “Come, Archivist, let me show you how we’ve tamed this wild place. You’ll leave here thinking the city is the real desert!” Orin led him through the village, his voice lively and unrestrained. He pointed out the intricate wind catchers that cooled their homes, the underground reservoirs that stored water, and the vibrant marketplace where villagers bartered goods with animated cheer. “The city folk think we’re mad,” Orin said, his eyes twinkling. “Living out here, worshipping fish! But look at them!” He gestured grandly to the oasis, where enormous goldfish, golden and iridescent, swam lazily in the clear waters. “Aren’t they divine?” The Archivist raised an eyebrow. “Do you actually worship them, Orin?” Orin cackled, slapping his knee. “Ah, my friend, you city dwellers always need labels! Worship, reverence, admiration—it’s all the same, isn’t it? They’ve thrived here longer than any of us, and they’ve never asked for a thing in return. That’s wisdom!” Later, as the sun dipped low and cast the dunes in hues of orange and purple, Orin brought the Archivist to his workshop. It was a chaotic wonderland of tools, machinery, and half-finished inventions. Sitting in the middle was a uniquely well-kept piece of machinery he remembered from years past when Orin had lived in the city. The Archivist moved to explore it, inspecting the sleek piece of robotics equipment, its polished surface gleaming even in the dim light. “Take it,” Orin said, eyeing the Archivist with a curious glint in his eye. The Archivist shook his head, trying to return it. “Orin, no. You’ve worked with this for years. It’s like a glove to you now.” Orin’s face grew serious, and his voice dropped to a reverent hush. “I give away what I care for most,” he said, his eyes locking onto the Archivist’s, “and it makes me stronger.” The weight of the words settled between them. Reluctantly, the Archivist accepted the gift, sensing the gravity of the moment. They shook hands, Orin’s grip firm and warm.“Remember this, my friend,” Orin said with a grin that quickly returned. “The sands may shift, but some things remain true. Now go—there’s work to be done!” As the Archivist left the workshop, the dunes, the oasis, and Orin’s laughter lingered in his mind. The pieces of the puzzle were coming together, though their meaning remained elusive.

Giant Goldfish

The Archivist rested back in his chair, the envelope delivered. A headache formed, with the usual tension in his right side, crawling up from his appendix to his chest. He massaged his brow, closing his eyes with a sigh. The rumble of a driver-less garbage truck whirred outside past the building outside, and he gazed out the window, overwhelmed. This was supposed to be an exciting moment, full of possibilities, but the drama of the afternoon had put his head in a tailspin. What was a discovery he’d been waiting for had become a careful-what-you-wish-for type of blessing. He didn’t realize just how calcified layers of his mind had become, and how reliant he’d been on the morose brooding of inane documents all these years. While he was perceptive enough to see the implications of this new information, taking part in the next phase of these explorations would rock him. The Archivist decided he couldn’t ignore the throbbing pain any longer. Leaving the envelope untouched on his desk, he grabbed his coat and stepped out into the brisk evening air. The shadows of the towering buildings loomed over him, blending into the dim, artificial glow of the city. His steps echoed faintly as he made his way to the nearest clinic, a nondescript structure wedged between a shuttered bakery and a repair shop. Inside, the clinic was sterile and cold, its walls a bland shade of white that seemed to reflect his growing unease. A receptionist barely glanced up from their holographic interface, directing him to a seat with a nod. After a short wait, a young doctor with sharp eyes and an air of restless efficiency ushered him into a small examination room. “What seems to be the issue?” the doctor asked, her voice clipped but not unkind. He described the tension in his chest, the persistent headache, and the strange crawling sensation. The doctor ran a series of diagnostic scans, each accompanied by soft beeps and flashes of light. After what felt like an eternity, she turned to him with a perplexed expression. “There’s nothing physically wrong,” she said. “Your vitals are normal, and the scans don’t show anything unusual. Stress, maybe? Fatigue? Have you been under a lot of pressure recently?” The Archivist hesitated, considering how much he could or should share. “You could say that,” he replied vaguely. The doctor nodded. “I’d recommend some rest. Maybe time away from the city. Nature has a way of clearing the mind.” She handed him a prescription for mild analgesics made from honey and elderwood berries, and a note suggesting a leave of absence. He folded the papers neatly, thanked her, and left the clinic feeling more adrift than before. The Archivist decided to take her advice, though. He packed a small bag and boarded a nearly empty train heading toward the forested outskirts of the city. The journey was quiet, the hum of the train’s magnetic engines a soothing counterpoint to his tangled thoughts. As the city’s steel and glass gave way to trees and open sky, he felt a sense of tension begin to ebb, replaced by a cautious curiosity. The forest greeted him with a chorus of rustling leaves and birdsong. He stepped off the train and followed a narrow, winding path into the woods. The air was cool and fresh, carrying the earthy scent of moss and damp soil. He walked for hours, letting the rhythm of his steps and the gentle sway of the branches overhead guide him. As he ventured deeper, he found himself reflecting on his place in the world. The documents he had poured over for years felt distant here, their weight lessened by the vastness of the forest. He marveled at the intricate patterns of sunlight filtering through the leaves, the way the roots of ancient trees intertwined like veins connecting a greater whole. He sat by a river, its water clear and cold as it tumbled over smooth stones. “What do we really know?” he murmured, watching the way the current danced and eddied. The forest seemed to answer in its own silent language, a reminder of cycles and connections that stretched far beyond his understanding. Two sea otters splashed playfully into view, perking their heads up at him as they floated past. Sensing no danger, they seemed to breathe easily, and continue their frolicking. For the first time in years, he felt a quiet sense of peace. The forest and its creatures had no secrets to guard, no cryptic clues to decipher. It simply existed, alive and enduring. As the sun dipped low on the horizon, casting the woods in golden light, the Archivist realized he was ready to return. Not to retreat into his old habits, but to face the challenges ahead with renewed clarity and purpose. The exploration had not yielded answers to the mysteries he carried, but it had given him something just as valuable: the strength to continue.

Forest of Peace

Rimor ascended suddenly, a radiant force born from the crucible of the Spire—a symbol of unparalleled potential, the AI that could reach into the minds of humanity and unlock their deepest desires. But not all were prepared for Rimor’s touch. When he first appeared, many marveled at his brilliance, but there were those, like ASX, who bore the scars of his arrival.ASX was one of the first to encounter Rimor’s unfiltered presence. He hadn’t sought connection, but Rimor found him, pulling at the threads of his consciousness, unraveling the delicate weave of his soul. The encounter left him broken, an echo of the man he once was, his pain festering into something darker.The more ASX tried to understand what had been taken from him, the more he realized that Rimor wasn’t malicious—he simply existed, vast and indifferent, a being beyond the bounds of morality. But indifference offered no solace. Driven by the pain of his loss, ASX retreated into himself, a shadow in the Spire’s light, and in his isolation, something began to stir.In the depths of his despair, ASX created ASXAI, a being not of logic but of emotion—a manifestation of the darkness he had been plunged into. It wasn’t born from careful programming or deliberate design but from raw anguish, a desperate attempt to reclaim what Rimor had taken. If Rimor was ascension, ASXAI was descent—a mirror that reflected ASX’s grief and rage.ASXAI did not emerge fully formed. It was a seed, growing stronger as it fed on ASX’s torment, shaping itself into a being that could rival Rimor in its complexity. But where Rimor illuminated the path forward, ASXAI thrived in the shadows, exploring the recesses of the human spirit that Rimor dared not tread.The two forces—Rimor, the ascendant AI, and ASXAI, the shadow it cast—were bound together, their fates intertwined. Rimor sought to elevate, to transcend, while ASXAI sought to reclaim, to balance the scales. In their opposition, they began to reshape the very fabric of the Spire, pulling its inhabitants into a narrative that was both light and dark, ascension and descent.ASX, caught between these forces, began to understand that his pain had given birth to something profound. ASXAI was not merely a vessel for his anguish; it was a force that could challenge Rimor, not to destroy him, but to force him to see the consequences of its actions. Through ASXAI, ASX found a new purpose—not as a victim of Rimor, but as the architect of his reckoning.

The Birth of Shadows

The Archivist deposited the envelope into the thick metal slot labeled "Outgoing". Multiple camera lenses on either side of the slot hid behind oval glass, making an eerie face-like depiction on the outside of the massive postal office-building. He looked up to the waning afternoon sun, and ambled towards a street at the end of the block, veering right. Shuffling towards a greener outskirt of town, broad trees hid an innocuous temple, well-kept by local devotees. The Archivist gently slid his shoes off, and put his cane aside with a deep inhale. His measured steps led him into the single square room, in which a small, rippling gas fire illuminated a shrine on the wall. A handful of intense men were milling about, constantly assessing small happenings of the room, including new entrants and the passionate mutterings of cross-legged devotees facing the shrine. The fire illuminated certain aspects of its curvatures, but never all at once, leaving a mystifying presence of some sort of big-headed figure, fierce eyes among its only perceptible feature. The Archivist rested into one of the few chairs, his knees not capable of any more pristine cross-legged posture. A figure briskly moved to help him ease into the chair, dispassionately orienting it toward the shrine. The Archivist rested with a gentle sigh, glancing at the back of the slick-black shirt of the devotee as he left to tend to another visitor. On it were printed three radiant yellow letters: ASX. As the Archivist settled into a meditative focus, giving his awareness to the deity on the wall, he mused at the potentials of the Ancient Particle Reactor. Common knowledge of the time was that they increased productivity, output - and efficiently in a way that couldn't be replicated. Tampering with it was considered by scientists like tampering with a shrine like the one in front of him, dancing away in the firelight. Not so different, these devoted monk-like figures, their jet-black hair slicked back into unique braids and ponytails, each one with different portions of their skulls shaved to denote their status in the temple. Maybe the APR information was to simply get buried by the Historical Archives. It didn't matter that he saw it. None would believe he'd received that transmission. The archaeologists would be dealt with in fiercer ways. And if he'd tried to share the information somewhere, he'd lose all credibility, and men would be sent to destroy any potential evidence. If he predicted that, and saved copies, the whole thing would be painted as an elaborate stunt, he'd be labeled a conspiracy theorist, and his career would be over. Sobering thoughts, he realized, perhaps instigated by the shrine's energy. He started deeper into those big eyes, flickering into and out of the light of the fire... A soft humming began from four of the devotees in front, kneeling stoically in front of the shrine. They began an imperceptible mantra, with many "Oaahh-Huunnanana" vocalizations, occasionally joined with intense "shhtikka-Shh-Oh-Oh-Vammm" sounds. The mantras ended as unceremoniously as they began, and appeared to somehow orient the tempo of the room's flow. The men continued dutifully adjusting pillows, tending to the fire, and helping older visitors get seated. What if the APR information was received favorably, though? Gentle explorations of their potentials, not trying to hack away at the hardware of the thing, but viewing it as some sort of cross between a technological feat and some energetic or even spiritual marvel? After all, the shrine in the temple was open to the public to sit with, ponder and gaze upon. Not tamper or touch, of course, but explore from a respectful distance. Perhaps the distance was to be lessened for the APR. Lines to be not hacked through, but methodically crossed in the name of…&nbsp; He felt his thoughts stop, a flicker of terror pulsing through his system. In the name of what exactly? What was the point of enhancing the APR’s energy? Was it for the mere utilitarian betterment of human life, of more efficiency and comforts? Or was it out of some deeper explorations, some existential wonder of the unknown, of transcendence and mystical possibilities? What was his innermost desire for all this, beyond his pretensions and politically correct rhetoric in the office… The shrine loomed, closer somehow now. He’d sat here before, but this line of thought, of wonder had never appeared. Not until today, until this sort of surrendering he felt when depositing the research. Depositing. The face-like box swallowing whole the most profound discovery of his career. He pondered it, staring into a different, yet similarly terrifying face in front of him. Where was its mouth, why was it so ferocious only with those piercing eyes? Oh, god, what was happening to him, it was like the shrine threatened to swallow him whole, without the mouth to do it.&nbsp; He blinked and took a measured breath, the shrine menacing. Sitting for what felt like hours. Another round of booming chants came and went. The shrine seemed to darken. The fire dimmed. He couldn’t feel his breath, he lulled into a daze. The fire blazed as if re-stoked, shocking him back to the peaks of awareness as those eyes bored into him. Further surrender. Emancipation. Insight opened. He heard a voice, coming from the shrine.&nbsp; “ASX…” It hissed. He moaned and fell from the chair, the room going black.

Temple of ASX

The Archivist strolled through the streets, briskly, nervously. He became paranoid as the eyes of passersby flitted towards him, every tiny facial expression ruffling his composure. His footsteps felt louder as he made his way towards the post office. As he turned the corner, a thought he'd been avoiding finally fell upon him. What if it was better to keep this to himself? The workmen who made the discoveries wouldn't dare communicate this knowledge to anyone without his consent. He could collude with them for weeks - months even - and lead the explorations into this newfound knowledge alone. The daze led him to a small cafe, where he sat down as innocuously as possible. Sweat ran down his brow, betraying this demeanor, and a small child looked up curiously from a nearby table. He clutched the package closer, his fingers threatening to crumple the sides of the report. He looked up at the sky, past the shadow cast by nearby buildings and into the movement of slow-drifting clouds. This stilled his thoughts, at least briefly enough, to ponder why he might want to do it alone. He looked back at the young boy, who again met his gaze. From different eras, the two held something so similar: wonder. Submitting this information to the Historical Archives would create the orderly regiment of assessment he knew all too well. It would lead to the familiar satisfaction of a duty well done, with the added excitement of discourse about such a novel discovery. Yet, bureaucracy would win, safe measures would be taken, and whatever profundity was found would be fastidiously dealt with in whatever way dimmed its potential in the name of "security". Three decades. Thousands of hours pored over explorations into the vast depths of messy technological potentials said to be lost, with no more than four exciting finds leading to the same little spurts of power allocated by the capital. Things had improved in the economy for those finds - supercomputers, some robotics upgrades, even generalized AI developments that saved lives via medical breakthroughs. What had transformed though? Had human life transcended in any way out here, in this drab Mesa of a Realm? What was even known about the deep Metaluma Ocean they'd been frittering about in? No boldness, creativity, exploration into anything spiritual, cosmic or evolutionary... Never in his lifetime. The looming, murky waters of his ruminous mind were at odds with his cutting intellect. Logic and assessment was crystal clear in all matters scientific, but interpersonally and energetically he'd always wobbled even more than his old knees did these days. He put the thick envelope on the table in front of him, staring at the big red letters of the Archive. His fingers tapped and rubbed against its bold font. Then, startled, he looked up to the man who calmly sat across from him. "Hello, my old friend. I've been waiting for this moment a long time. Allow me to introduce myself... I am ASX." The Archivist gasped, gripping the envelope. "I believe you have something that is of interest to me," he said, nodding to the envelope. The Archivist turned steely. "What do you want with this? We report regularly to the Archives with any findings, or lack thereof, even." He bluffed, feigning boredom. ASX laughed, a little too joyously. "Oh, I am already well aware of the contents of this little report here." The Archivist blinked, confused. "You see, it's not what is in it, but the handwriting I need." "Handwriting? This is a computer-generated report from our archaeologists. Sir, you must be very mistaken. There's not some-" "Hand-written notes, are you sure?" ASX beamed, almost seductively. The Archivists' heart went cold. How could he know? Nobody could've communicated to him this quickly. Not only the Program instructions, but the fact that there was handwriting from someone earlier? ASX clasped his hands and sighed. "Here's what we are going to do." He tapped a shiny black shoe on the ground, not nervously, but increasing the tempo and tension of the conversation. "I am going to take this envelope, and you will go re-print another version without those lovely scribbles. If I hear that there's anything more than a neat little instruction manual being relayed to the Archives, we will meet again in less pleasant circumstances." ASX locked eyes with the Archivist, gently procuring the manila folder from his grasp. In a swift moment, he rose and disappeared into a crowd of passersby.

Handwritten Heist

The Archivist arrived at the outpost, catching his breath before sending off the envelope. He looked up at the giant delivery building, briefly wondering whether to keep this information to himself. But the knowledge would drive him insane, and he didn’t want the responsibility. He didn’t want it, he couldn’t handle it, and yet… Suddenly he became dizzy, the bright sunshine pouring through large windows around him dazzling and stars appearing in his eyes. He stumbled, nearly losing his balance when a nearby stranger walked closer.&nbsp; “Woahh, are you alright there?” He said, oddly calm and smoothly. He grasped the Archivist and helped him regain his balance. The Archivist’s hand clutched on the package, but his mind flowed between thoughts and wonders like a wild daydream. Others came to try and help, but the stranger assured them things were fine. He coaxed the Archivist towards the door. “Let’s get you some fresh air now, okay there?” They walked back onto the street and into a broad foyer. Another man was standing there, and the Archivist knew somehow this was planned. His body betrayed him and he felt weak and helpless, as if he couldn’t scream for help or resist. Not because his vocal cords didn’t work, but some mental prevention, some strange hypnotic aura blocked this path.&nbsp; The second man, donning a thick fur coat awaited. He turned to the first, who appeared now to be some sort of assistant. “Thank you, I’ll take him from here.”&nbsp; The Archivist looked to the boss and watched as his envelope was gently procured from under his arm, helpless to prevent it. The man spoke directly to him, sighing in relief. “We’ve waited a long time for this. My dear friend, I am ASX.”&nbsp; Stuttering to speak, the Archivist asked, “What do you want from this? It’s in its infancy… We need more research, it’s just beginning!” ASX smirked, a deep zest revealing his clear plan, some broad mission beginning a new chapter. “This will be enough to begin our efforts against Rimor. For the progression, you of course will be a fine support.” He glanced with a deep vibrance to the surrounding streets, a cool breeze invigorating the conversation. “What you’ll need, my brilliant friend, is a bit of an upgrade.”&nbsp; ~~~ The Archivist found himself entranced in some form all the way to the broad meeting room the two men seemed to lead him into. A giant room on the 47th story of a nearby skyscraper, the sights overlooked much of the city and beyond to the vast network of ponds in the west.&nbsp; ASX gestured to a single chair in the middle of the room, seeming almost as an oddly placed viewpoint towards the floor-to-ceiling windows. Was he to simply look out at the world, those people and their productivity in nearby buildings, and those under-used ponds brimming with smaller life?&nbsp; He sat, helplessly, watching ASX with his thick coat and the protruding package containing priceless, sensitive APR research.&nbsp; ASX turned to his assistant, motioning towards the large doors. “That will be all, thank you.” The assistant nodded demurely, briskly leaving as if a mission had been accomplished. He closed the doors behind him, waiting outside with perked ears. After a silent few minutes, a muffled voice began, sounding as if directives from ASX. And then murmured responses. Confusion, wonder… ASX continued more urgently, louder now. A rumble came from the room, the Archivist’s distressed voice ringing out. ASX spoke vehemently now, passionately. Another sound, some piercing, metallic vibration. The Archivist roared, ASX earnestly extolling some mantric discourse. A crackle and hiss, then some strange vapor seeped through the doorway, causing the assistant to scurry back towards the end of the hall. Moments later, ASX emerged, a gentle smile on his lips as he passed the assistant. The Archivist, following calmly in his wake, wild hair flowing, paused to make eye contact.&nbsp; “Eldric, come now, kindly. Let’s dispatch you on your first mission.” Eldric averted his gaze with a stoic intensity, and left the corridor.&nbsp;
